As a wedding photographer, I'm often asked to do the same thing over and over: capture moments in time. And while I love doing just that, there's one element of my job that can be a bit monotonous: the groom's portrait. But it doesn't have to be! The groom has many details that are overlooked by brides because they're so focused on themselves (and who could blame them). So let's refocus our attention on what makes him look like an amazing specimen of manhood: his shoes, his suit/tuxedo and everything else in between!

Suit/Tux

It's easy to overlook one of the most important parts of your wedding attire: the groom's suit or tuxedo. Since you've likely already invested in a bridal gown, it's easy to forget that this is a special occasion for both you and your spouse-to-be. Make sure you're putting forth your best effort with these tips.

  • Make sure it fits properly. Before walking out the door on your big day, check that all buttons are buttoned, collars are crisp, and pants hang evenly around each leg without pulling anywhere. Also double check that any visible underwear lines are gone! If not (or if they weren't there in the first place), consider wearing some silk boxer briefs under your trousers as an extra layer of protection against wardrobe malfunctions during photos later on down the road (plus they'll give some added support to those who need it).
  • Check for cleanliness so everyone can see how dapper you look when posing for pictures! Check pockets before getting dressed because sometimes lint will build up over time which might show up in photographs; just make sure nothing else has found its way onto these surfaces as well--whether from pets or previous owners--and remove anything unsightly with care before heading outside! The same goes for shirts: check stains before putting them on since stains may come back through even after washing them off; similarly inspect shoes as well since scuff marks can sometimes transfer onto clothing too easily when walking around outdoors all day long during an outdoor event like this one

Nails

It's time to trim and polish your nails, because they'll be on full display throughout the ceremony. You'll want them to look clean, trimmed, and polished—but don't go overboard with glitter or other decorations that steal attention away from your wedding ring.

The groom shouldn't feel like he needs to adhere rigidly to any particular style—he can wear any color or shape of nail he likes as long as it's well-groomed and appropriate for his personal taste. The groom should also strive for a neutral color (such as white or clear), since these colors won't distract from the bride's dress in photos.

Shoes

This is one of the most overlooked elements of the entire wedding. The suit may be the most important part because it’s what you wear for this day, but your shoes are also an essential part of your look. They need to match your suit and they should also be polished and comfortable. If it’s going to be rainy or snowy that day, you need a pair that will keep your feet dry—and don’t forget about appropriate footwear for activities like dancing throughout the night!

Pocket Square

A pocket square is a small, decorative fabric square that is worn in the breast pocket of a suit, or other clothing. It's a traditional accessory for men's dress clothes; however, it can be used to add color and style to an outfit. The pocket square can also be used as a tool to cover up a stain on your shirt.

Any and ALL tattoos

Tattoos are a great way to show off your personality and make a statement about who you are, which is why we recommend them for every guy getting married. A tattoo can be as subtle or bold as you like, and there’s no shortage of options out there. If you have one already and feel confident in showing it off on your wedding day, great! If not, maybe it’s time to get one!

No matter how many tattoos he has or what they look like—whether he has an elaborate sleeve on one arm or just a small piece on the back of his neck—guests will notice and comment on how much ink he has (and probably ask him where they can get their own). This is especially true if the groom-to-be doesn't normally wear any shirts that show off his body art in public. With this list of ideas...you'll be able to find something that suits him perfectly!

Cleanliness of hairline (or lack thereof)

A groom's hairline is one of the most important aspects of his appearance on the big day. After all, if you're going to have your wedding photos plastered in every room of your home for years after the wedding, you want to make sure you look good.

If you do have a beard, make sure it's well groomed and trimmed. If there are any spots that need attention or stray hairs that need trimming, now is the time to get them fixed up before your big day! Similarly, if you have a mustache or goatee (or both!)—make sure those are looking good too!

Let's be real, we do a great job at catering to our brides, but we can't forget about the groom. He may only have a few things to remember, but making sure those few things are just right will make for an amazing portrait!

I don't know about you, but I'm always surprised when people ask me to photograph a wedding. Even though I've been doing it for a couple years now and have gotten pretty good at it, I still love every single one of them.

When it comes to the groom, we tend to focus on what he's wearing and how his tux fits him. But there are other elements that make up your image as a groom: your hairstyle, how comfortable with yourself you look in those clothes and even whether or not you're having fun!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this little tour of the overlooked elements that can make a big difference in how your groom looks on your wedding day. It’s not always easy to think about all the details when you're busy with so many other things, but we promise that it's worth it—not only will you save yourself a lot of stress and worry later on, but also look great in your photos!
